on their applications to increase their chances of admission. Gunna, though, applied to most schools as an Asian studies major. He had spent his high school career highlighting the voices of Asian Americans through stories he wrote, art he created and arguments he chose on the debate team.
He showcased all aspects of his personality in his application, writing his college essays about dancing to Erkyah Badu at the Riverfront Jazz Festival in downtown Dallas and his love for the TV show Dance Moms, which he said he believes helped him stand out among other applicants. In college applications, many “people become very robotic, and it becomes very much who can get the highest grades and who can do the most crazy extracurriculars, win the most awards,” he said. “A lot of the time, something that’s missing is that … personality, something to humanize the applicant.”LaSheyla Jones, a Dallas urban planner, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture from Prairie View A&M University and a Ph.D. degree in urban planning and policy from UT-Arlington.
Jones said she’s had instances where she did not get hired for a job and later found out someone she believed was less qualified got the job because they looked more “professional” or were more familiar with the hiring manager. She said she thinks affirmative action policies — at universities and in workplaces — are necessary to help balance the scales.
“I think that, by allowing different metrics to determine entry points, whether it’s for a job or for a school, it allows for growth in both,” she said.
