Cain-Gribble is the first north Texas born figure skater and LeDuc is the first openly non-binary athlete to qualify for a Winter Olympics.
Carrollton-born Cain-Gribble, 26, is the first North Texas native figure skater to qualify for the Olympics. This Olympics berth also is a major milestone of an even longer North Texas-rooted journey, that of the pair’s coaches, Peter and Darlene Cain. Yes, they are Ashley’s parents, and they’ve been laying a foundation for ice skating in North Texas since their 1990 arrival.
Unlike the Russian Olympic Committee team, which has three pairs ranked among the world’s top four and thus all will compete in Beijing, the United States has only two entries. . Darlene was in Euless, where she and Peter coach some 40 skaters of all ages and abilities. Peter was in Team USA’s bubble in Los Angeles, preparing to leave for Beijing.
Darlene was a Canadian national team ice dancer. When their competitive careers ended, Peter and Darlene spent a decade traveling the world with Ice Follies, Holiday on Ice and Disney on Ice, with frequent stops in Dallas. The Cains train roughly a dozen national-level skaters, including 2021 U.S. national silver medalist Amber Glenn, who contracted COVID-19 and was forced to withdraw after her short program.
“Timothy is just a wonderful person to work with, executes everything on a daily basis, does everything we ask,” Peter said. “Same with Ash. She does everything possible to make the pair better.” “Pretty much the first five minutes of the tryout, I knew they would be fine,” Peter said. “When I saw them talking, the banter between them, the smiles, I knew something good was going to come out of it.”
