Data and satellite images show oil spills over five years that threaten species like orca whales.
Thousands of tonnes of oil have spilled routinely into UK waters from oil and gas production threatening marine life like porpoises and orcas, according to data shown exclusively to BBC News.
Energy campaigning group Uplift obtained the data through Freedom of Information requests to the offshore oil and gas regulator, the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning. Companies are allowed to release some oil as a by-product of routine production and are given permits that allow discharges.
Uplift also worked with another NGO, SkyTruth, which analyses satellite pictures of UK waters. Images from 2020 to 2022 also show large numbers of oil spills.The amount of oil released is not comparable to large disasters like Deepwater Horizon when more than 125m gallons of oil spilled. But Hugo Tagholm, director of ocean conservation campaign group Oceana, said: "oil spills every other day from these regular releases is a huge problem for marine life".
Oceana and Uplift say that whether the leaks are permitted or not, the pollution damages critical ecosystems that are essential for ocean health and tackling climate change.
