It could apparently reach the entire U.S. and may be capable of carrying multiple warheads to several targets and help it overwhelm missile defenses.
CBS News' Lucy Craft observes that Kim officially marks ten years in power next month, and observers expect his fast and furious pace of weapons development will mean more major missile and nuclear tests in the coming weeks and months.
KCNA claimed the launch met its technical objectives and proved the ICBM could be operated quickly during wartime conditions.Craft points out that Japan's defense minister said the missile's range could put the entire US mainland, including New York or Washington, DC., within reach. The missile's enormous size suggests it could be capable of carrying multiple warheads to several targets and help it overwhelm missile defenses.
The agency published photos of the missile leaving a trail of orange flames as it soared from a launcher truck on an airport runway near the capital, Pyongyang, and Kim smiling and clapping as he celebrated with military officials from an observation deck. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, told Council members, joined by Japan and the Republic of Korea, that in addition to the latest ICBM test, North Korea"also appears to be actively pursuing its nuclear program."
North Korea's resumption of nuclear brinkmanship reflects a determination to cement its status as a nuclear power and wrest economic concessions from Washington and others from a position of strength, analysts say. Kim may also feel a need to trumpet his military accomplishments and drum up internal loyalty while the country faces economic difficulties.
