Nonprofit founder Kristi Schiller survived 6 strokes, but wishes she recognized warning signs
Kristi Schiller, founder and Chair of K9s4COPs, is shown in Houston with guard dogs Daisy and Johnny Cash in this Feb. 18, 2014, file photo.Fifteen months ago, Kristi Schiller was shopping at H-E-B when she experienced a sudden and severe headache. She stopped by the pharmacy for some medicine, but it didn’t alleviate the ringing in her head.
“I’m trying to make a joke because I can tell the kid’s scared to death,” Schiller said. “I started crying when I heard my husband’s voice. I said ‘I don’t know how to get home.’” Awareness is crucial, because the chances of surviving and recovering from a stroke are much higher if you can, the CDC advises. They include suddenly-occurring symptoms such as numbness , confusion or trouble speaking, severe headaches and issues with walking or coordination.
At the time, she thought she might have had a pinched nerve in her neck, or even a brain tumor. She went to see her doctor, but he couldn’t determine a cause. Schiller made arrangements for an MRI after speaking to a neurosurgeon. Two nights before her scan, she felt nauseous and had cold sweats. She got out of bed to get an ice pack, but she collapsed a second time when she got to the freezer. Her husband heard the crash and came out to find her passed out on the floor, surrounded by Blue Bell ice cream and the glass shelf she grabbed as she fell.
