Reports of an active shooter caused people to flee en masse from the area of Walnut and Front Streets during Monday night's July 4 celebration.
There is not an active shooter in downtown Harrisburg, city authorities said Monday night, despite a barrage of 911 calls and people fleeing en masse from the fireworks viewing areas along Front Street.
City spokesman Matt Maisel said that a fight between two groups of July 4 revelers in the area of Front and Walnut streets around 9:30 p.m. appears to have generated reports of an active shooter, but police have cleared the area and no shooting has occurred. Officers were overheard on the county’s dispatch radio working to reunite children with their parents after families who had packed the riverbank to watch the fireworks began to flee the area.
The city will release more information as it becomes clearer what exactly transpired, Maisel said late Monday night. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
