Under the proposal 18-year-olds would be given a choice between a full-time placement in the armed forces or volunteering in their community
Good morning and welcome to i's liveblog. Rishi Sunak has announced mandatory national service will be brought back in if the Conservatives win the next general election. Under the proposals, 18-year-olds would be given a choice between a full-time placement in the armed forces or UK cyber defence for 12 months or spending one weekend a month for a year volunteering in their community. They could instead choose to volunteer one weekend per month – or 25 days per year – in their community.
It is estimated the programme will cost £2.5 billion a year by the end of the decade and the party plans to fund £1 billion of this through a crackdown on tax avoidance and evasion. The remaining £1.5 billion will be paid for with money previously used for the UK Shared Prosperity Fund , which is a package to support charities and community groups.
