In the pandemic, five of my best friends got together on Zoom and caught up with our friend in a different city as she went on maternity leave, sending her body lotion and a blanket for the baby. We missed her, and hadn’t seen her in months. Some cultures believe present-buying for a baby before it’s safely in the world is a bad idea .
