Counter demonstrations were also taking place, with dozens of people with Union flags standing close to the Cenotaph on Whitehall, drawing chants of “shame on you” from pro-Palestinian marchers.“A suspect has been arrested on Whitehall after a Police Officer was assaulted,” the Met said. “The suspect is in custody and the police officer is being looked after by police medics, on route to hospital.”Police could not immediately say who the arrested man was.
The National March for Palestine set off from the capital’s Victoria Embankment at midday on Saturday. The group said it was “escalating” its protests as “peaceful” marches had been ignored by the Government – but later said its activists had left “peacefully” after being “threatened with arrest”.The Met Police said that more than a thousand police officers are on duty “to provide reassurance to those who want to make their voices heard, as well as proactively dealing with anyone who breaks the law.
