No, Americans actually agree on how to teach history | Opinion
, there have been intense conflicts over how to teach history across the state. At the core of these divisions are the perceptions we hold about how our political opponents want to teach our story as a nation. Contrary to what we may believe, new research from my organization, More in Common, shows there is significant common ground in how Americans feel our history should be taught.
These inaccurate assumptions and false impressions too often dominate the public debate and drown out the voices of the majority of people who hold more complex, moderate views, those my organization calls the “Exhausted Majority.” The reality is that Americans across race and ideology want students to learn about the achievements and failures in our history, and they want schools to teach the histories of Black Americans, and of other minorities, as integral parts of our broad national narrative.
