Texas A&M men's basketball, who finish SEC play in second place, helped their NCAA...

Reed Arena is filled during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game between Texas A&M and Alabama in College Station, Texas, Saturday, March 4, 2023. COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M helped itself in a big way in the NCAA Tournament in its regular season finale on Saturday, in one of the all-time raucous atmospheres in a packed Reed Arena.

The No. 24 Aggies likely increased their NCAA Tournament seeding with a 67-61 defeat of No. 2 Alabama before nearly 13,000 fans, some of whom spent the previous days camping out around Reed Arena in anticipation of the regular season finale. Alabama defeated Auburn in overtime on Wednesday, otherwise the Aggies and Crimson Tide would have been playing for a tie for the SEC regular season title — and the top seed of the upcoming SEC tournament — instead A&M was left trying to help itself in NCAA Tournament seeding, in which the Aggies likely did in impressive fashion.

As a bonus the Aggies also won 15 league games for the first time in any conference they’ve competed in. Alabama had a chance to tie the game with less than 35 seconds remaining but A&M’s Andersson Garcia collected a key steal and Wade Taylor made the ensuing free throws following a foul. Taylor finished with a game-high 28 points.
