Nike wooed Norwegian soccer star Ada Hegerberg away from Puma with a long-term endorsement deal announced today that commits the sneaker giant to a 10-year tie-up with the prolific forward

Nike has publicly supported efforts to reduce pay disparity between men and women athletes, including ad campaigns centered around the support for players on the U.S. women’s national soccer team and their demands for fair pay after winning the 2019 Women’s World Cup.for female track stars that left pregnant athletes and new mothers at risk of losing their compensation.

“It's been tough for the men's football,” Hegerberg says, “so obviously if you look at a historical view it's always the weakest link that's gonna suffer from a crisis like this and I feel like women's football is still in a phase where we're the weakest link in football. Hegerberg has been vocal about her feelings on equal pay and left the Norwegian national team in 2017 to protest how the country was treating its women’s team. She has yet to return, even after it eventually did. She declined to comment on her departure from the team and said she will continue to fight for equal pay, no matter how things go when play resumes.

Her fight with the team followed Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and other members of the USWNT who filed a complaint against U.S. Soccer
