A carpenter who stabbed four people with a knife and then murdered a man who intervened to protect others was also put behind bars last month

A husband who cut his wife’s body into more than 200 pieces and two men who murdered footballer Cody Fisher in a nightclub on Boxing Day were among the notorious criminals sent to jail in the UK in April.

Fareed Issa Tariq A rapist carried out two near-identical sex attacks 12 years apart by luring lone women into his car. Fareed Issa Tariq, 43, was imprisoned for 18 years at Swindon Crown Court in April after he was convicted of rape at the same court in February. Thomas Betteridge A teenager who stabbed an 18-year-old to death during a fight in Bournemouth town centre has been jailed for nine years after being found guilty of manslaughter.

Betteridge, of Southsea, Hampshire, was sentenced to nine years in a young offender institution with an extended license period of three years. Judge Richard Marks KC described her conduct as “sheer madness” adding: “Especially moments before the collision, your two passengers to your knowledge had been standing up dancing." He rejected the suggestion that someone in the back had tugged her arm, saying: “It is clear there was one reason and one reason only for this collision, namely the grossly excessive speed you were travelling.”

The woman had been drinking alcohol and was “emotional” after reporting a disturbance, Chester Crown Court heard. Masterson turned his bodyworn camera off about 15 minutes into his visit to her home and consensual sexual intercourse followed while the woman’s children were asleep in the house. Nicholas Metson stabbed 26-year-old Holly Bramley at least four times in March 2023 before dismembering her and storing her body parts for a week in the kitchen larder at the flat they shared in Stamp End, Lincoln.

Remy Gordon and Kami Carpenter Two men were jailed for life for the murder of footballer Cody Fisher, who was stabbed to death inside a Birmingham nightclub on Boxing Day in 2022 as part of a “sustained attack on a man who was significantly outnumbered”. Prosecutor Michael Duck KC told the court Gordon was later captured on CCTV in a pizza takeaway restaurant “re-enacting the attack… and laughing while he did so”.

Sentencing Davis to a life term, Mr Justice Cotter said the murder of Ollie had involved a “devastating” fatal spinal injury inflicted up to eight days before death. Davis, who was living in Upper Temple Walk, Leicester, with Driver when Ollie was killed, was told he had shown “callous indifference” by opting not to summon medical help.

The 47-year-old, who is diagnosed as having autism, was cleared of a further three charges of sexual assault against two other women, following a trial at Portsmouth Crown Court. Sentencing Babu, Judge James Newton-Price KC told him that he abused the trust of his patients. Jake Hill and Tia Taylor A carpenter who stabbed four people with a knife and then murdered a man who intervened to protect others has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 28 years. Jake Hill, 25, attacked five people in around 20 seconds outside the Eclipse nightclub in Bodmin, Cornwall, shortly after 3am on April 30 last year.

CCTV cameras captured Hill running across the road and looking for his knife in the hedge before heading straight into the fight that had broken out outside the venue, with Taylor and Powell following behind. Shouts of “I’ve been stabbed” were heard a short time later, with bleeding victims running for help.

Tyrell Lacroix, 23; Jashy Perch, 20; Jordan Walters, 24; and Alrico Nelson-Martin, 20; were sentenced for conspiracy to wound with intent to cause serious harm, at Kingston Crown Court. Perch was also sentenced for having an offensive weapon and for possession of cannabis, while Nelson-Martin was also sentenced for possession of a shotgun with intent to endanger life.

Lacroix was jailed for 21 years with a further five years on licence, Perch was jailed for 16 years with a further four years on licence, Walters was jailed for 13 years, and Nelson-Martin was jailed for 14 years. Five dock officers flanked Rounce as he was sentenced, after previous episodes of violence involving the teenager, who kicked out at security staff and had to be restrained on the first day of his trial.

He was sentenced to four years and three months in prison at Woolwich Crown Court, after previously pleading guilty to 21 charges of sending a hoax substance contrary to the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001. The court heard that Preston sent 42 envelopes containing white powder, which was later confirmed to be talcum powder, from September 20 to November 4 2013.

Tyrone Hollywood, Leighton Williams, Aaron Coates and Rusharn Williams-Reid Two gang members who chased and killed a 50-year-old father, who was attacked with machetes and left to die on a busy street, have been jailed for life. Tyrone Hollywood, 17, and 29-year-old Leighton Williams were handed minimum terms of 19 and 29 years respectively after being caught on CCTV as the older man inflicted a fatal chest wound on Kelvin Ward.

Passing sentence on the first anniversary of the murder, the judge said she was sure that Leighton Williams stabbed Mr Ward in the heart and that Hollywood then stood over and “taunted” the victim. Although Mr Ward’s son is thought to have been the original intended victim, the judge added: “This was a planned attack. The defendants were not randomly driving around. They were prepared to use lethal violence.

The firearm was never recovered and the alleged gunman, who cannot be identified, died before he could stand trial. The alleged gunman was described in court as a “core member” of the “67 gang” from Brixton Hill in south London. On the night of August 29 and 30 2022, the defendants and Mr Malutshi were said to have attended a party at the nightclub. The 24-year-old alleged gunman was said to be “moving mad” before he produced the weapon and shot at Mr Malutshi, causing panic in the club. Prosecutor Karim Khalil KC had said the bullet hit Mr Malutshi in the left leg and passed straight through.

Judge Susan Evans KC told Bournemouth Crown Court that the attack undermined the public’s sense of safety on busy beaches. She said: “Young people should be safe on a busy beach on a sunny afternoon, sadly that was not the case.” She added: “It was a brazen attack in broad daylight with many people around. The beach should be a safe place where young people can go without fear of being raped or sexually assaulted.

Donna Marie Brand A woman who was one of three people convicted of murdering a teenage girl more than 27 years ago has been jailed for at least 17 years. Donna Marie Brand, 44, was found guilty in December at the High Court in Glasgow alongside Robert O’Brien, 45 and Andrew Kelly, of killing O’Brien’s 14-year-old girlfriend Caroline Glachan in August 1996.

Brand could not attend court for sentencing in January because she was in hospital, and appeared for sentencing via video link. Judge Lord Braid said Brand had been convicted of a “brutal” murder and while she did not take part in the assault itself, she shared in responsibility for the crime because she left Caroline face down in the river while she was still alive and was part of a plan of “murderous violence”.

The trial had heard how the pair were on a night out for Curtis’ birthday in Chelsea, London, before they travelled to Ms Parrin’s address in Arthur Road, Ifield, in the early hours of the morning. The court heard Prior had then returned to his own home to collect a key to Ms Parrin’s flat, and the knife, before heading back to her flat, and Curtis helped him re-gain entry to the building.

The defendant, of Perne Road, Cambridge, allegedly set up a bank account in the name of an elderly patient and transferred himself £1,000 per day for more than three months. He was also said to have tried to cash in stolen cheques, and used a stolen card to buy food from a hospital vending machine. Police established that other patients at Addenbrooke’s Hospital had also reported thefts. These included reports of a bank card and several cheques, belonging to a 74-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s, going missing. The woman was admitted in March 2022 and died a week after her discharge in May that year, with the missing items reported by her daughter.
