Patrick Grimley and his wife Ciera were killed in an accident on the main Armagh-Newry road last November along with Ciara McElvanna, wife of 2002 All-Ireland winner Kevin
As the full-time whistle sounded in Croke Park on Sunday, Niall Grimley fell to his knees. The emotion of the moment was understandable and overwhelming.Patrick Grimley, secretary of the Madden club and Niall’s brother, was killed in a car accident last November along with his wife Ciera. Their friend Ciara McElvanna, wife of Armagh 2002 All-Ireland winner Kevin, also died in the tragedy.
“It is a bit surreal. When the full-time whistle went, I dropped to my knees. It is an unbelievable experience and it is an unbelievable thing to go through,” said Grimley. “I lost my brother and his wife and that was the first thing that I thought of. I was doing it for them. It is not really about a cup or a medal for me. It is seeing Patrick’s and Ciera’s three kids on the pitch after, to be able to put a smile on their face, that makes me happy regardless if I win or lose.
“When I grew up, it was Kevin McElvanna in my club - he was the All-Ireland winner. It was John Toal, ‘Geezer’ and Oisin McConville - they all had their medal.
