Michelle says she was sexually abused by four different men before the age of twelve
A woman from Northern Ireland has recently been recognised for her work in her local community, after she became a trauma counsellor years after she was a victim of sexual abuse.
“I know what it feels like to be lost in a world of pain and confusion, with no one to turn to, listen, or to understand the silent cries for help that were often evident in my behaviour. “My experiences, as painful as they were, are the driving force in my work with young people. I want to ensure that no child or young person ever feels as alone or suffers for as long as I once did.”
“My personal history of trauma, neglect, sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, alongside the suicide of my mother in 2007 and the most recent traumatic loss of my brother in February due to a road traffic collision has given me an understanding of the struggles that many children and young people face and the limited amount of support out there due to continued funding cuts to vital services.
