Cal McIlwaine has been doing 'fly in fly out' work in mines in Western Australia for five months
A man from Northern Ireland has revealed the impressive amount of money he has been able to save while working in mines in Western Australia - but warned that the "fly in fly out" work isn't for the faint-hearted.
He has been working in a mine as a FIFO worker. This is where an employer will temporarily transport the employee to a location or site of work, and then transport them back for a period of rest. He said: "There are heaps of Irish people on every site. Take the risk, if it doesn’t work out then just go back and everything will be the same as whenever you left.
In a video, he explained: "It's obviously very hard, you're working long hours, it's dirty work in the heat. But you're also getting paid a lot. Cal explained he works for three weeks and gets the fourth week off. For this, he gets $3,470 in his first week as the Monday is spent travelling to Pilbara, and $3,944 for the second and third weeks as he can work every day.
