Northern Ireland is at crisis point with unwanted and abandoned dogs and puppies as greed, ignorance and desperation combine to create a disaster in animal welfare
.Around the country, shelters are being forced to deal with the animal detritus of people's lives; some dumped and abandoned without care or conscience. And in other cases they are finding owners with no other option but to beg to surrender a loved family member they just cannot keep because of costs, a death in the family or even an upcoming prison sentence.
In Co Antrim eight Collie pups were left in freezing conditions in a cardboard box outside Benvardin Kennels. "We called him Forrest and now, a few days on he is making great progress and is back at Benvardin where he is living the life a pup should have with a nice heat lamp and all the puppy food and treats he wants. All this is only possible with the kind help and donations of the public.
She explained: "So many issues have come together to create a perfect storm and it's the dogs who are paying the price. Anyone who is currently looking to rehome their dog will find that when they phone, most of the rescues that they're full to bursting and they will be asked to join a waiting list. "Then there are those people who bought a dog on a whim and want rid of it on a whim too, others who bought a dog as a present for someone who didn't want it after a week, others whose dogs are no longer the adorable cute little puppy, others who want rid of an other dog because they got a pup, the reasons are endless.
"We are disheartened that despite numerous pleas to the public regarding responsible pet ownership, we are still seeing defenceless young animals being abandoned only weeks after Christmas.
