The council passed on a nearly 10% rates rise to its constituents earlier this month

A local council in Northern Ireland has spent hundreds of thousands on leases for public beaches and marinas from the Royal family in the last five years.

The foreshore of much of Northern Ireland’s coastline is owned by the Crown Estate, which generates money for the Royal family through its portfolio of land, and charges local authorities here for the use of their foreshores. Newry Mourne and Down was the next highest local authority to pay out to the Crown Estate for its leases, more than £130,000 over the last five years.

“Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has a number of regulating leases with the Crown Estate, with payments set by the Crown Estate.
