The deal, which runs through the 2030 season, most notably will extend the NFL regular season to 17 games.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman and Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt were among the stars who opposed the deal, saying owners had not conceded enough to warrant the inclusion of the 17th game.
Rodgers, who serves as the Packers' NFLPA representative, voted against the deal in a February meeting of the union's board of player representatives during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. The board voted 17-14, with one abstention, to pass the proposal on to the full body of players. “The fact that even got in there when, the guys that I talked to around the league, every meeting that was had before these negotiations got amped up, nobody wanted 17 games,” Rodgers said on ESPN Wisconsin's"Wilde & Tausch" radio show on March 6. “A lot of us are wondering how the hell that even got into the conversation because nobody wanted it."
The proposal, however, offered short-term incentive to many players simply looking to secure a roster spot. Rookie minimum salaries will increase by $100,000 in 2020, while other minimum-salaried players will see a boost of at least $90,000 this year, according toThe deal's approval adds one level of certainty to an offseason calendar that has already shifted.
