New York City will ban police restraints that choke people, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday, the latest in a series of reforms to law enforcement practices.
The New York Police Department already has a prohibition against officers’ use of chokeholds as restraints. NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo was fired in 2019 for using a banned chokehold that resulted in the 2014 death of Eric Garner in Staten Island.
