The attorney general’s office said the Trump legal team continues to push meritless arguments in court filings in a $250 million lawsuit.
Attorneys from James’ office argued that lawyers for Trump and other defendants in the case, including the Trump Organization and two of Trump’s adult children, have pushed meritless arguments in legal pleadings at least five times, most recently in a pretrial summary judgment motion submitted a month ago and made public last week.The arguments they cited include
that James, the top legal officer in the state, doesn’t have legal standing or authority to bring the case against the former president and his Manhattan-based real estate, golf resort and hospitality company — claims that were rejected by New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron in October and November, and by an appellate court in June.
James filed a mammoth lawsuit last September against Trump, his business and some of his family members, alleging that the company for years lied about its financial condition and the value of its assets to obtain favorable loan and insurance rates and to avoid taxes. The parties have denied culpability.The case is scheduled for a bench trial Oct. 2 in front Engoron, who could levy significant fines and sanctions on Donald Trump, Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and the Trump Organization.
