The second series of the prison drama focuses on the lives of female inmates in a fictional women's prison in Cheshire. The main characters, Kelsey, Orla, and Ari, face various challenges and struggles while serving their sentences. Despite the seemingly civilized environment, the prison is not without its dangers and conflicts.
For the second series, McGovern has shifted his focus to a women’s prison, the fictional HMP Carlingford in Cheshire , and wisely drafted in a female co-writer, Helen Black pregnant teenage remand prisoner; Whittaker was Orla, a single mother who’d been given an unexpected six-month sentence for “fiddling the leccy”; and Lawrance played Ari, serving life for murder.
Despite its exterior looking like a Second World War PoW camp, Carlingford appeared a touch more civilised than the men’s facility in series one; the women were free to wander to the TV common room, showers and kitchen. But appearances can be deceptive. I did question how realistic it was that Orla would be given a first-time custodial sentence for tampering with her electricity meter, especially in these overcrowded times. It did however spell out the societal harm of banging up a mother doing her best to survive, especially during a cost of living crisis, even if it meant dipping into criminality.
