New Kids On The Block: The Mixtape Tour 2022 at RMFHCLEVELAND, Ohio – Booty shaking, ab flashes and copious amounts of crotch grabs. No, it wasn’t a male review. It was just the first half-hour of New Kids on the Block’s performance at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Tuesday night.
Astley still rocks a mean suit. His performances of chart-toppers “Never Gonna Give You Up” and “Together Forever” marked fun moments . But Astley proved he’s more than a novelty act with a blissful performance of “Cry for Help.” The mix of different genres fed into the diverse crowd’s appetite. Salt-N-Pepa was able to draw huge ovations with their renditions of big hits like “Push It” and “Shoop,” which featured a guest-rap from NKOTB’s Donnie Wahlberg.
Quite often the group stood on stage leading glorified karaoke sessions of songs by other artists . It was an odd move considering the night’s opening act – DJ group Illtown Sluggaz featuring Vin Rock & DJ KayGee of Naughty by Nature -- did the same thing. But, hey, it gave the crowd a quick version of “Cleveland Rocks.”
Was it flawless? No. The more recent hit “Summertime” felt like a parody of a boyband performance . Meanwhile, Wahlberg – never the group’s best singer – delivered “Cover Girl” more like a spoken word piece.
