45% of young people polled consider the candidates’ age a sign of wisdom, while 34% view it as a source of generational disconnect.

In a head-to-head race against Trump, Sanders and Biden both triumph with around 56% of the vote, compared to Trump’s approximately 35%, indicating that many young people are prepared to close ranks against the sitting president. Biden’s lead over Trump is up from 52% last month; Sanders’ lead did not change. Both Democratic candidates have made modest gains in overall favorability among young voters since February.

When it comes to facing off against each other, however, Sanders continues to fare far better than his Democratic competitor—at least among the under 30 set. Sanders bests Biden on measures like “most authentic” by 29 points, “cares about people like you” by 35 points, and “most likely to grow the economy” by 13 points. Most importantly, 53% of young Democratic primary voters would prefer Sanders clinch the nomination, over 36% hoping Biden holds onto his frontrunner status.

Unfortunately for the Vermont senator, his competitive edge among 18 to 29 year old voters does not offset his delegate count.recently remarked following Super Tuesday defeats” Currently, he trails Biden by 296 delegates. With 1,181 delegates in his camp, Biden is inching closer to the 1,991 needed to secure the nomination.

If—and it’s still a big if—Sanders drops out soon, it will be important to watch what steps Biden takes to bolster his support among young voters who may prove key in the upcoming election. For starters, delivering on his promise to nominate a female vice president will likely be viewed favorably among these young voters: 64% of individuals polled considered tapping a female running mate to be either somewhat or very important.
