A new-look organisation for Ayr shire curlers has gained charitable status - and they want to make a sensational return to the region.
Confirming the news, a statement on Ayr Curling Club’s website said: “Following Ayr Ice Rink closing in September 2023, a steering group was set up to look at the feasibility of building a new curling ice rink for Ayrshire. This group, led by Bert McKay, meets once a month and their first task was to form a new not-for-profit company limited by guarantee with charitable status. This has now been achieved and is called Curl Ayrshire Charity.
However, the move has already been criticised by other ice sports users in the figure skating and ice hockey community, claiming the ‘curlers only’ plan is ‘selfish.’ The closure also resulted in nearly 1000 users of the ice being left ‘homeless.’ They included scores of curling clubs, with a total membership of around 550, along with two figure skating clubs and a junior ice hockey club- catering for around 350 youngsters every week.Representatives from Ayr Bruins Junior Ice Hockey Club, Kyle Figure Skating Club and Ayr Figure Skating Club then banded together and launched a bold move to save the rink from closure.
