“This work represents an advancement in the bioengineering of skin substitutes to enhance the regeneration and production of native-like skin and suggests that bioprinted skin may be applicable for human clinical use,” the researchersBioprinted skin could benefit patients suffering from full-thickness wounds resulting from severe injuries or burns. Nearly half a million people in the US receive treatment for such wounds yearly, costing a whopping $2 billion.

The treatment works well for most patients, but one significant limitation exists. “Autologous grafting requires a sufficient volume of skin to harvest, and, in burn patients, the availability of donor sites may be limited by extensive skin loss,” the study authorscould play a significant role. The researchers can create as much bioprinted skin as needed for a lab transplant. All they need is some cells from the patient’s body.
