Idris Elba returns as DCI John Luther
Netflix has finally confirmed the release date of the new Luther film, as well as teasing fans with the upcoming crime-drama’s first trailer. Luther: The Fallen Sun follows the BBC’s hit series, which wrapped up in 2019 after five seasons.
The show’s star Idris Elba revealed the film had completing filming in September, with Netflix later releasing several first-look stills. Now, the streaming giant has given fans a brief glimpse of the popular detective with a teaser trailer, while confirming exactly when it will launch on the platform and in cinemas.
The clip offers few details about the film, only showing its brooding titular character shrouded in darkness as a voiceover says “Something’s coming.” Netflix’s official synopsis also gives little away regarding The Fallen Sun’s plot.It reads: “In Luther: The Fallen Sun, a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars.
Netflix has confirmed that the film will serve as a “gritty [and] epic” continuation of the TV series, with Luther forced to go on the run after being framed for murder. Alongside Elba, The Fallen Sun also stars English actor-director and star of the The Lord of the Rings and The Batman, Andy Serkis, who is set to go up against Luther as the film’s villain.Also starring is Oscar-nominated screen and stage actress Cynthia Erivo, who appears in an as-yet-unnamed role.
Netflix has confirmed Luther: The Fallen Sun will be released in select cinemas across the UK on February 24. It will be available to stream on Netflix from March 10.
