Aimenn Penny, 20, was indicted on charges of obstruction of persons in the free exercise of religious beliefs, a hate crime under U.S. law. Penny also faces two counts of arson and one count of possessing a Molotov cocktail.
CLEVELAND, Ohio— A neo-Nazi accused of firebombing a Geauga County church ahead of a planned drag queen story hour and brunch event was charged Friday with a federal hate crime.
Those events nationwide have been met with anger by far-right groups, including neo-Nazis and White Lives Matter Ohio, which Penny belonged to as a member. He said as he watched internet videos of drag shows in France, he became increasingly angry and decided to attack the Community Church of Chesterland. He told FBI agents that he “would have felt better” if his Molotov cocktail were more effective and “burned the church to the ground,” according to court records.
Penny told officers he was spreading the word that Black Americans were “the problem,” and that he believed Black citizens were “solely responsible” for the high crime rate in the country. He told Alliance police that he believes in, and looks forward to, a race war in America.
