Pentagon chief Mark Esper says needs to speak with his Turkish counterpart to understand President Erdogan’s comments about shutting down military bases that station US troops in Turkey

Pentagon chief Mark Esper's statement comes days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's warned that Ankara may close Incirlik and Kurecik bases where US soldiers are stationed"if necessary".

"When necessary, we will discuss with all our delegations, and if necessary, we may close Incirlik [air base in southern Adana province] and Kurecik [radar station in eastern Malatya province]," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a televised interview on Sunday. "It has not been brought up to me before. The first I heard of it was reading it in the papers as you just mentioned and so I need to talk to my defence counterpart to understand what they really mean and how serious they are," Esper told reporters in response to a question about the issue.

"But again, I think this becomes an alliance matter, your commitment to the alliance, if indeed they are serious about what they are saying."Turkey's position on the events of 1915 is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia took place when some sided with invading Russians and revolted against Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.
