In Lancashire, Blackpool has the highest rates of childhood obesity
Nearly a quarter of children aged 10 and 11 in Lancashire are classed as obese - but there are big differences across the area and the nation.
But it is still higher than before the pandemic when 20.7% of children measured in 2018/19 were obese. In Lancashire, Blackpool has the highest rates, with more than a quarter of 10 and 11-year-olds classed as obese , followed by Blackburn with Darwen . Poor children are far more likely to suffer from obesity than wealthier classmates. Research completed by the Nuffield Trust last year showed that local authorities with the highest percentage of children living in low-income families had, on average, 6.9% more overweight or obese Year 6 children than the most affluent areas with the lowest rates of poverty.
After Barking and Dagenham, Knowsley in Merseyside and Sandwell in the Black Country have the highest rates of obesity. Three in 10 children live in poverty in Knowsley and two in five in Sandwell.
