The city plans to remove 48 trees and relocate 19 others at the park, leaving some residents frustrated.
on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve building and archaeological permits for the first phase of the two-part, $7.75 million 2017 bond project for Brackenridge Park. The commissioners delayed their decision in Austin last month after a group of San Antonians attended to oppose the project, which would remove dozens of trees from the park.
“It became very clear to the executive committee that there is passion on both sides of this issue,” Nau said. “Nobody is going to be 100 percent happy with either one of these decisions no matter which way the board goes.”Phase one of the Brackenridge Park project includes repairing the river walls in the 1920s Lambert Beach area. Originally, plans called for the removal of 105 trees, but after protests from San Antonio residents, that number dropped to 77.
The engineers — Moises Cruz and Carlos Gutierrez — recommended a pier-based structure that would allow most of the trees to remain in place, which would cost more. The current plan would need to remove any tree within five feet of the wall. The engineers said with their approach it would only require as much as 12 inches.
