NATO needs to prepare for war with Russia in order to maintain peace. If action is not taken now, NATO could be at war with Russia by its 76th birthday. It is crucial to show political will and military power to deter Russia. Reports suggest that Russia is using chemical weapons against Ukraine forces, and it is clear that Vladimir Putin has no limits. Despite the lack of indication for action from the UK, it is important to act now and not let this malaise continue.

Nato has maintained peace for 75 years. But if it does not prepare for war in Europe now, it could be at war with Russia by its 76th birthday.

What we lack in military hardware, the UK makes up for in the ability to wage warfare. We are masters of commanding and coordinating forces. Hence, we must use this expertise to lead the fight against Russia not, as Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has suggested, encourage other Nato members to take control. The UK should therefore be planning the next phase, which might involving soldiers on the ground, as well as pushing for more action from other members.

Lord Cameron’s comments to the BBC last week, especially his remark that Nato should not put “boots on the ground” in Ukraine, shows where the UK is lacking in this area.“If we can get that money out of the US Congress, if we can get Ukraine the arms they need, if we can show Putin that he can’t outwit us, and that Ukraine is going to fight back and win back more of its territory,” he said.
