It comes as infection rates begin to rise once again, with cases jumping by 25%, including a ‘marked’ increase in infection rates among the over-70s, according to the Office for National Statistics. Across the UK 1.3 million are likely to have tested positive for coronavirus since the end of September.In England, 1.1 million people have tested positive with infection rates being the highest amongst the elderly as one in 40 have likely caught the virus.
Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser at the UK Health Security Agency, said the latest increases are ‘concerning’ and cases and hospitalisation rates are at their ‘highest level in months’.
