Poor and disoriented, she commuted to Queens College to study English and threw herself into the cheap comforts of American fast food. “There was a McDonald’s and a Dunkin’ Donuts right next to the college, and you could pay a dollar for this massive bucket of fries,” she recalls. Yet she soon found her new diet unsustainable: “I gained about 20 pounds in a month.
