Officer Rex Engelbert and Detective Michael Collazo, the two police officers who engaged the shooter at the Covenant School mass shooting in Nashville, addressed the media for the first time Tuesday.
Officer Rex Engelbert and Detective Michael Collazo discussed their responses to the March 27 shooting and expressed their condolences to the families of the six victims.Engelbert, in describing his response to the shooting, said before he arrived at the scene, he could feel this was not one of the several false calls he had responded to in the past.
Collazo described his response, and how once they heard gunshots coming from the second floor, they moved quickly. “That’s when I ran into the second victim, laid out on the ground. We pushed past the victim because we continued to hear more shots being fired. You could clear as day tell they were rifle shots being fired,” he added.
"I can tell you that just like every other officer that was out there, it’s not just us. My wife’s going through this. My family’s going through this. Officer Rex’s fiance’s going through this. Sgt. Mathes’s wife is going through all of this, and it’s tough, but our department has done a phenomenal job," Collazo said.
