We chat with ThePower EPs Naomi de Pear & Jane Featherstone and showrunner Raelle Tucker about bringing the novel to the screen and producing the primevideo series' electrifying effects:
The Power is a new sci-fi series from Prime Video that follows the interwoven stories of several women as a new power begins to awaken within them. Based on the critically-acclaimed novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman, who is also one of the executive producers on the show, The Power centers on a new organ present only in women: the skein. This development gives women the ability to produce powerful electricity, in turn aggressively shifting the power balance between men and women.
Raelle Tucker: That's a really tricky question. I think the most challenging aspect of building this show is to have six interweaving storylines that aren't automatically connected right from the get-go, and you're kind of wanting to watch them being drawn toward each other slowly. So it wasn't so much a conversation about, "Hey, this person should have more screen time or less screen time.
Naomi de Pear: Yeah, that was something that from the get-go involved lots of departments: makeup, costume, VFX, SFX, the actors, and we had a movement coach. And it was really important to everyone that it felt really organic, because what you want is for the audience to watch - especially the female audience - and be holding their collarbone and thinking, "God, what if I had that?" And maybe even starting to believe that they do.
