Deptford Little League lost two umpires early int the season due to verbal abuse from spectators. Now anyone banned for abuse must umpire 3 games to return to being a fan.
A Little League in Gloucester County has come with a clever way to make parents and spectators think twice about giving an earful to its umpires.
If the person doesn’t comply, he or she will be banned from all youth sporting events in town for a year, according to the township’s code of conduct. “So far all the feedback’s been positive.,” Bozzuffi said. “We’re hoping we don’t have to hand out disciplinary actions — that’s not our intention. We’re trying to educate people as to what goes on in the course of a game and the difficulties an umpire has in making some of these calls.”“They think you just go out there and it’s easy,” Bozzuffi said. “The umpire is concentrating on a lot of things. are just concentrating on just their child.
“One gentleman just started umpiring three weeks ago and was doing a lot of games just said, ‘I’m really sorry, I thought I had tough skin, but I don’t. I can’t take it. I can’t do it anymore,’” Bozzuffi said. Williamsport, Pennsylvania Little League International applauded the efforts of the Deptford Little League to improve fan behavior at games.
