The poll comes as state lawmakers consider ending New Jersey ban on self-serve gas.

An attendant fills gas at a station on Route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights in March.More than half of New Jerseyans support allowing people to pump their own gas in the state — a practice that’s been banned for more than seven decades — but only if stations are required to keep a full-service option, according to a new poll.

At the same time, 60% are opposed to allowing self-service is stations are allowed get rid of attendants completely, while 37% are in favor. But the poll found only 21% of New Jersey residents believe introducing a self-serve option would actually cut the cost, while 76% believe the self-service price would stay about the same as the full-service price now.
