Students in the Freehold Regional High School District who live within 2 1/2 miles of school will have to find a new way to get to class, officials said.
is eliminating courtesy busing in its 2023-24 budget, the superintendent said. Local officials blamed the cut on decreases in state aid stemming from a 2018 state law that altered the formula for allocating funds for education in New Jersey.
School districts are only required to provide free bus transportation for high school students if they live 2 1/2 miles or more from their schools, according to state law. However, some districts provide free courtesy busing for students who live closer. Eliminating courtesy busing for Freehold Regional’s high school students who live within 2 1/2 miles of their schools will save the district $3.5 million, officials said. The cuts will eliminate buses for approximately one-third of students in the regional district’s six high schools.
Freehold Regional serves students in Colts Neck, Englishtown, Farmingdale, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Howell, Manalapan and Marlboro.“Without legislative change to the school finding formula, what we’re going through tonight is still only the tip of the iceberg, in terms of what’s going to happen to this school district,” Superintendent Charles B. Sampson said at a school board meeting last week in which officials outlined the $214 million spending plan for next year.
Because of the distances students live from schools, the elimination of courtesy busing will have the biggest impact on students from Freehold Borough, Boyce said.
