Gov. Phil Murphy signed an order in November to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030.

’s administration to adopt specific standards for reducing greenhouse gases over the next decade ito combat climate change in New Jersey, alleging the state is not following Murphy’s own policies.

EmpowerNJ, a collection of more than 120 environmental, faith, community, and grassroots organizations, filed an appeal Thursday in state Superior Court in an effort to compel the administration to adopt enforceable goals to cut emissions 50% by 2030. Though the Democratic governor announced that goal in November, the coalition said the state Department of Environmental Protection has not adopted the standards.

The coalition argues this is part of a larger problem of Murphy’s administration not taking enough action to follow up on its promises to protect New Jersey from global warming. “It is not enough for Governor Murphy to say he wants to reduce emissions,” said John Reichman, chair of BlueWaveNJ’s Environment Committee and an attorney for the coalition. “He must act, and he must act now.”EmpowerNJ said it petitioned the DEP last July to set and enforce benchmarks for the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 50% from 2005 levels by 2030, following a 2007 state law aiming to protect New Jersey — a coastal state — from global warming. From D.C.
