The mural, created by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, is on a wall outside the Women's Rights Information Center in Englewood.
believes creating artwork of Black women in public spaces places them in a position that cannot be ignored.
“Installing a piece of meaningful public art was an opportunity that couldn’t be missed,” Foundation Associate Director Danielle De Laurentis said. “There was no better way than through public art to honor the significant accomplishments of these women in history, while bringing together and elevating the voices of Black women in Englewood today.”
The mural also features resident Kia S. Thornton Miller, who runs a mother’s support group and whose family has lived in the city for generations. She is painted alongside her daughter and Bergen County Technical Schools freshman Toni Michelle Miller, who is an activist in the city’s Black Lives Matters movement.
De Laurentis said an artist selection committee, whose members included Black woman residents of Englewood, the project’s partners, members of the arts community, the Englewood Coalition for Racial Unity and Equity and city officials, reviewed submissions before selecting Fazlalizadeh. Two public workshops were held, where the community at large shared their input and concerns, De Laurentis said.
