British Olympic and World Champion Joe Choong tells i he fears for the future of modern pentathlon - and fears politics will drive more athletes than ever into retirement after Paris 2024
This summer will be the last time horse riding features in the modern pentathlon after the International Olympic Committee voted to replace the event with obstacles from 2028.The 28-year-old is a well established figure within the GB team, favoured to collect another gold this summer, but has criticised the IOC’s decision to alter the event so radically.
“Rather than someone like myself or other athletes being able to give our opinions, we have been shut out of the whole decision-making process,” Choong said. “I had to focus on just being an athlete and falling back in love with the sport. To remember why I started it.” “You don’t want to have sub-par performances at an event at the Olympics without making a mockery of the whole elite sport and Olympic system.”Horse riding has been a core element of the event since its invention in 1912, and its near-end has created an ‘end of an era’ appeal that has drawn some athletes back from the fringes of retirement.
