Emma Edwards has been in dialysis for a number of years after her kidneys declined following the birth of her son in 2000
When a Lancashire woman was pregnant with her second son, she was diagnosed with kidney disease that would change the rest of her life.
"But it came back that he was a match, but my body couldn't accept the kidney donor from him direct and it still came back that he couldn't." As a result of this, the family went through a process where someone can choose to donate a kidney to a stranger and in turn, it triggers a chain of transplants through the scheme.
Ever since he was 13-years-old, Emma and Craig's 24-year-old son Bradley had wanted to donate one of his kidneys to his mum. "I thought that was a bit too young, I said to him, no I want you to go to college, I want you to go to uni. "They said it was a one-in-a-million chance that it would come back," 45-year-old Craig explained. "This is because every time you get pregnant, or every time you have a blood transfusion you get new antibodies."
"We had the meeting but we said, 'no we've got to do it' because this will be our final chance really," Emma said. "Because I've got so many antibodies and my immune system is really really good, they said I probably would never ever get another chance for a transplant, especially if he's the donor because of how reactive my body is."
