My Hero Academia's scariest villain is its first.

My Hero Academia has featured some truly terrifying villains over its hundreds of chapters, but its first is still its most horrific. The terror that this villain instills shouldn't be shocking given mangaka Kohei Horikoshi's constant flirtation with the horror genre. What is shocking, however, is how early this villain appears and how they outdo later antagonists like Shigaraki and Dabi.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT My Hero Academia's villains are some of the most terrifying in all of Shonen manga. Shigaraki is a hand-covered juggernaut straight out of Akira who can disintegrate anyone around him with his deadly abilities. Dabi is a walking flamethrower whose stitched skin makes him resemble a Frankensteinian monstrosity.

My Hero Academia's First Villain is Sludge Nightmare In My Hero Academia's first chapter, an unnamed sludge villain tries to take control of Deku's body by climbing inside him. It is heavily implied that this would not only kill Deku but also be incredibly painful. And since the sludge villain is made of liquid, it is very hard to prevent him from actually forcing himself down someone's throat and taking control of their corpse.

The sludge villain emphasizes the danger that My Hero Academia's world presents to a normal person. The fact that the villain doesn't even get a name implies that they are nothing special in the grand scheme of things and that there are many other villains out there who are just as terrifying. This is somewhat proven true once the League of Villains is introduced.

While the sludge villain may not have as much depth as some of the other villains like Dabi, he serves his purpose well as a great hook to My Hero Academia's world and story. If Horikoshi does create a horror manga after My Hero Academia concludes, this shows that he'll be able to make its opening chapter quite terrifying. So even though the sludge villain may not be My Hero Academia's best character, his terrifying nature does serve a meaningful purpose in the story.
