Income inequality within a friendship group can make holiday planning a minefield. Kat Storr and her university gang find a solution
Kat Storr with her friends. She says, ‘We decided that we could all afford to put £20 into someone’s dormant bank account each month and just leave it there to accumulate over time’
The specific amount was decided on because we knew we wouldn’t really miss it – life wasn’t so expensive then! It also seemed to be the fairest amount given the pretty large disparity in our salaries. While we, we’ve known each other long enough to know who gets the juicy bonuses and big pay rises and who doesn’t. There’s no bitterness at all about this within the group.
When we started the fund we had no final amount in mind, or really any idea of where we’d go or for how long. A weekend break in an AirBnB was floated but, of course, as our pot has grown, so have our plans. We’ve done enoughand cottage breaks together to know that no one really wants to spend their valuable time away from real life food shopping, cooking and tidying up. We do enough of that at home.
At our 20th anniversary meal we started a proper conversation about when and where we should go. There are approximately 20 months between the first person’s 40th next month and the last. This means we probably won’t go away until February or March 2025, leaving us plenty of time for the pot to grow. Suggestions of locations have ranged from an all-inclusive in Mexico or Thailand, to Ibiza or Italy, although the latter two may not have quite what we’re looking for at that time of year.
