History and memory: The value of preserving the past 🛩️ 💬
Recent publicity about the possible removal of Guy Gibson’s dogs memorial and remains from Scampton persuaded me to write a little about some of the local history I am aware of.
Most of the information about my father came from my mother, Kath Johnson, known usually by her family as Bet. 29 Squadron at the time flew Bristol Blenheim’s which were not designed to be used as night fighters and they began to convert to Bristol Beaughfighters. I was aware Ted suffered from mental health issues and that he attended mental health clinics at St Johns hospital in Bracebridge. I do not know if this was a general health problem or related to war experiences.
It became obvious that Lancasters, after night raids, returning hone with the rising morning sun would leave rear gunners unsighted to German fighters behind them - an obvious easy target for disabling the aircrafts defence.
