rate, we’re quietly placing an entire generation of chronically ill Americans at a socioeconomic disadvantage. And that disadvantage, left unchecked, will go on to hurt everyone — patients, their families, and the economy as a whole., more than 40% of the American population suffers from a chronic illness. That means 133 million people suffering under the undue expenses of conditions that often require regular medication, doctor visits, and treatments.
“I’m definitely behind,” Azmia says. “The fact that my friends are having kids and buying houses and [my husband and I] are barely able to pay the electric bill is crazy. It makes it impossible to save.”At times when Azmia has had trouble affording her medications, other health expenses ballooned. Lisa also cites the high costs of alternative treatments that aren’t covered by insurance, such as massage therapy and supplements, as an undue burden on her family.
“Tell me how many other 27-year-olds have to sit here and think about what they can put off paying because their medication comes to $60 every two weeks on $12-an-hour wages?” It’s a bleak outlook for millions of patients and their families, but some patients refuse to accept the status quo.
