A prominent Muslim advocacy group is demanding that Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland reinstate parental opt-outs for gay and transgender content after the school district said it would no longer accept such requests.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has collected over 400 signatures in an online petition urging Maryland's largest school district allow parents to opt their children out of lessons with sexually explicit content and notify parents when such coursework is being used.
The CAIR petition says the school district is"undermining" the state law on the parental notice and opt-out and urged the district to reinstate the option. “Parents and guardians entrust their children to the school system with the expectation that these rights are respected and recognized. Schools should respect their authority by restoring the option to opt their children out of reading sexually-themed content or participating in sexually-themed lessons and discussions, without any adverse consequences.”
