Homewood police on Wednesday said the injured officer continues to recover at UAB Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The chase began about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday when an officer initiated a stop for a traffic violation on a white Hyundai Sonata in the 200 block of Lakeshore Parkway. Hicks was driving the vehicle, and McCall was a passenger, police later learned. As the pursuit continued through Birmingham McCall threw a handgun from the vehicle, said Homewood Sgt. John Carr. The handgun was later recovered by a Homewood police officer.
“This reckless maneuver forced civilian vehicles and Homewood police vehicles to take evasive action and resulted in a Homewood police motorcycle officer, who was operating his motorcycle in a support role, collide with another Homewood police vehicle,’’ Carr said.
