Murder Mystery 2 is having surprising success at Netflix, becoming the No. 2 biggest opening weekend for a comedy film on the streaming platform. A follow-up to Murder Mystery taking place four years later, Murder Mystery 2 sees Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston return as Nick and Audrey Spitz, now working as full-time detectives. When their friend The Maharajah is captured and his bodyguard is killed, the Spitzes must find out who among a set of suspects is the kidnapper and killer.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT According to Variety, Murder Mystery 2 saw near record-breaking success, becoming the No. 2 most-watched opening weekend for a comedy film. The movie boasted over 42 million views and 64.42 million hours viewed for the week of March 27 to April 2, appearing in Netflix's Top 10 in 91 different countries. The first Murder Mystery also scored big numbers: 24.7 million hours viewed.
The film also leans more into a wackier brand of comedy than Murder Mystery, bolstered by Nick and Audrey unraveling a larger mystery with many more people involved. Familiar characters also return to add to the comedy, including John Kani's Colonel Ulenga, who stays on the Spitzes side even as events begin to get more convoluted throughout the film. With a much bigger mystery afoot, Murder Mystery 2 also ensures its comedic moments fit right in with the higher stakes of the movie.
While Murder Mystery 2 may not be for everyone due to its tone and premise, it's surprising to see just how many views the film was able to garner over its first weekend. Because of its success, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sandler and Aniston return for Murder Mystery 3 some time in the future. For now, though, it appears Murder Mystery 2 has cemented the film series as a popular part of Netflix's comedy film lineup.
